Arundel is an attractive ‘picture postcard’ kind of town that is packed with beautiful old buildings and houses and topped off by a magnificent castle.
Arundel Castle itself is one of England’s longest-inhabited country houses, having been home to the Dukes of Norfolk for nearly 1,000 years, and is well worth an extended visit to enjoy the wonderfully preserved and presented interiors. The town centre is also a great place to wander on foot and look at the striking Georgian and Victorian houses (especially at the top of the hill in Maltravers Street) and poke around the quirky independent shops along the High Street and Eagle Street. There are many excellent restaurants and cafés in the area, which has a reputation for being quite ‘foodie’. There are also many artists living in Arundel and as a result an abundance of contemporary art galleries in the town. In August you can actually go into artists’ studios and see them at work as part of Arundel Gallery Trail. If you want a great view of Arundel take a trip on one of the tourist boats running along the River Arun, which snakes its way through the town. For an even greater adventure, visit the Arundel Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, where you can take a boat ‘safari’ to see water voles and other creatures in their natural habitat
